TASK 1

第一套

Some students prefer to review their course notes regularly throughout the semester. Others prefer to wait until just before exams. Which do you think is better? Use details and examples to explain your opinion.

第二套

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?Students should always be allowed to make video recordings of their professors’ lectures.

第三套

Do you think students should be allowed to record their professors' lectures during class.

TASK 2

TASK 3

Reading:

Throughout Europe in recent years, trees of the ash species have been dying from a disease caused by an infectious fungus (microorganism). This disease, known as ash dieback, is characterized by loss of leaves, particularly around the crown or top of an infected tree. Since ash dieback threatens to destroy European ash forests in the near future, scientists are currently investigating ways of protecting ash trees from the fungus.

One option is to cut down and remove infected ash trees in order to prevent the fungus from spreading. The rapid spread of the fungus stems from its ability to transmit its spores (reproductive cells) in the wind. Fungal spores can travel long distances by wind, potentially infecting many other ash trees. Removing infected ash trees would help limit the spread of the fungus and save healthy trees.

A second strategy is to treat ash trees with fungicides, chemicals used to kill fungus. Fungicides can be applied by aerial spraying, or spraying from an aircraft as it flies over locations with infected ash trees. The main advantage of using fungicides is that they can be applied efficiently over a large area, making them very cost-effective to use. Through aerial spraying, it may be possible to stop ash dieback by treating vast areas of forest with fungicides.

A third method is to use genetic information to develop ash trees that are immune to the fungus. While most ash trees exposed to the fungus eventually die from the disease, a few individual trees remain largely undamaged. These trees are thought to have some natural genetic characteristics protecting them against ash dieback. Scientists are now working to identify these protective genes in order to develop larger populations of ash trees that are resistant to the fungus. These disease-resistant trees can then be used to repopulate European forests with healthy ash trees.

1. dead leaves的数量太多,很难清理干净。并且dead leaves provide a lot of nutrients to the environment,如果清除掉会对生态环境产生有不良影响;

Reading:

Archaeologists have long debated the function of the walled hilltop sites which were built by prehistoric people more than 2,000 years ago in the Andes, the mountain chain in the western part of South America. The people who built these structures were often in danger of invasion, but some archaeologists claim that the sites do not have the features typical of fortified defensive structures (forts). They have presented several arguments supporting their view that the structures were not designed as forts.

First, the walls of the sites could not have blocked an invading enemy's access. Although the walls are strong, they do not surround the sites on all sides. Gaps left between the walls would have left many parts of the sites too vulnerable to attack. A wall that does not completely surround an area would not have been effective at keeping invaders out.

Second, there are multiple entrance ways at the ground level of the sites, which are not a practical feature for defensive structures. Defensive structures such as castles and walled cities in other parts of the world generally have only one point of entry and exit. In contrast, the numerous ground-level doorways of the Andean structures do not seem suited for a defensive purpose because they make it too easy for outsiders to enter.

Finally, there is no evidence of wells inside the Andean sites, nor is there any evidence of means for storing large amounts of water. Without a source of water, the sites could not be occupied for more than a few days. That would not be nearly long enough to survive a prolonged attack by an enemy surrounding the sites and preventing inhabitants from leaving or water from entering. Since the sites are so vulnerable to a prolonged attack, it is hard to see how they could have been designed for defensive purposes.

Listening:

Dr. Diaz:

Let's discuss the skills most needed by people who want to start and run their own business. Some experts propose that future businesspeople should focus on improving their sales techniques—after all, if you cannot sell your product, you will soon be out of business. Others believe that these future businesspeople would benefit most from learning management skills, such as how to lead teams and motivate employees. Which view do you agree with? Why?

Andrew:

I think that management skills are most important. Sales tasks are something that a businessperson can delegate to a team of salespeople once the business gets going, so it is really important that the future businessperson develops skills to manage teams of people. Without that, it is not very likely that the business will grow.

Claire:

Learning how to sell your product is the most essential task. I've read about people who had ideas about exciting new products to build a business around. They borrowed capital and started their business, but they could not explain to the public what made the products exciting. Since they could not sell enough products, their business failed.

Dr. Gupta:

In the past, progress in science and technology was generally slow. However, in recent decades, the pace of scientific and technological progress has increased dramatically with new discoveries and inventions being developed almost every day. Some people think that this rapid progress in science and technology is beneficial for society overall and should be encouraged. Others believe this progress is happening too quickly and could create serious problems. Which view do you agree? Why?

Claire:

The faster the discoveries, the better. For example, due to advancements in medicine, our lives are much better than those of our great-grandparents. Back then, life expectancy was significantly shorter due to a lack of medication whereas today, drugs are affordable and accessible. Anyone with a severe illness hopes for rapid scientific progress.

Andrew:

Most people don't have a say in the implementation of these new inventions, and that fact worries me. Just think about the widespread unemployment caused by the automation of many jobs: in this era of rapid technological change, it has become commonplace. People who lose their jobs may not believe that this progress is beneficial.
