Q1

Which courses or activities have had the greatest impact on you?

A: Student H H同学:

When discussing the courses and activities that have had the most profound impact on me, I would like to share reflections from several perspectives.

First and foremost, the school's Advanced Placement (AP) program stands out as a cornerstone of my academic journey. As a flagship curriculum at our school, the AP courses not only significantly expanded my knowledge base but also played a pivotal role in my college application process—a point I will elaborate on in subsequent questions.

Beyond academics, the extracurricular club activities have profoundly shaped my personal growth. As a member of the school's volleyball and basketball teams, I frequently participated in inter-school competitions, working closely with teammates toward shared goals.

In these intense matches, I gained firsthand appreciation for the importance of teamwork and the pride of fighting for collective honor. Every spike, every dive to save the ball, reinforced my sense of belonging and irreplaceable contribution to the team—an experience I could hardly replicate elsewhere.

Taking physics as an example, from the Foundational introduction to physics in Grade 7, to Physics 1 in Grade 9, to Physics 2 followed by AP Physics C: Mechanics and Electromagnetism in Grade 10, this step-by-step approach enabled me to systematically construct a comprehensive understanding of physics. The same coherence applies to chemistry, history, and other disciplines.

Additionally, the school's unique spiral curriculum system has deeply influenced my learning trajectory. This progressive teaching model allowed me to build upon existing knowledge each year, delving deeper into academic subjects.

Such a structured curriculum not only helped me grasp surface-level concepts but also empowered me to explore underlying principles and logical frameworks. Compared to isolated courses, this spiral learning model better ignited my intellectual curiosity and nurtured my ability to think critically.

For instance, starting with basic physics in Grade 7, progressing to Physics 1 in Grade 9, and advancing to Physics 2 in Grade 10, this incremental structure allowed me to tackle increasingly complex content. In AP Physics C, we studied not only classical mechanics and electromagnetism but also touched on foundational concepts of quantum mechanics and relativity—topics rarely covered in standard courses, making the experience exceptionally rewarding.

A: Student J J同学:

Regarding extracurricular activities, my high school years have been profoundly shaped by my dedication to Model United Nations (MUN). From Grade 9 through Grade 12, I participated in numerous domestic and international MUN conferences while guiding club members in conference preparation.

MUN's greatest impact lies in how it sparked my sustained interest in global affairs. Its core mission—researching complex world issues, debating solutions, and drafting resolutions through rigorous analysis and multilateral negotiations—compelled me to engage deeply with geopolitical realities. Beyond formal committee sessions, I frequently exchanged perspectives with delegates from diverse cultural and national backgrounds. These interactions not only ignited my passion for international relations but ultimately solidified my decision to pursue this field academically.

As a MUN club organizer, I honed practical skills such as communication strategies and collaborative leadership in — competencies that will remain invaluable throughout my career.

Most memorably, the human connections forged through MUN left profound impressions. These experiences will stay with me for life.

Q2

How do you balance academics, extracurricular activities, and personal interests?

A: Student M M同学:

I plan my time in advance, scheduling my academic work and extracurricular activities separately. When it comes to academics, I make sure to complete my assignments on time. For extracurricular activities, I participate during weekends and after-school hours.

In my daily life, I also set aside some time to do things I enjoy. For example, I love drama performances—they offer me exciting new experiences and teach me how to act and collaborate with others. Moreover, drama has helped shape my personality, and as a unique artistic activity, it can also benefit my college applications.

During exam season, such as AP exams, I focus more on maintaining a positive mindset and staying healthy, rather than cramming or doing excessive practice questions. I believe that consistent learning and regular review throughout the year are more effective.

After exams, I try not to stress too much about my results. Instead, I adopt a calm attitude, allowing myself to maintain a steady rhythm in both my studies and daily life.

A: Student L L同学:

I'm not particularly fond of the word "balance" because, in my view, academics, extracurricular activities, and personal interests often complement one another rather than compete for my time.

For me, skills are developed through practice. If you consistently work at a high intensity, your work efficiency will improve. Similarly, if you manage multiple tasks at the same time, your multitasking skills will get stronger. If you study math in school and also participate in math competitions outside of class, your math skills will naturally improve. So, I don't believe that doing three things in one day will necessarily result in poorer outcomes than focusing on just one. For instance, if you're studying AP History and complete three different history courses over three years, you'll likely find it gets easier over time. However, if you spend three years studying only one course, like World History, you may actually struggle more because you're repeatedly dealing with the same content. Facing multiple subjects can help you draw connections between them, which makes it easier to find solutions when you encounter difficulties.

That's why I prefer to take on more tasks and actively challenge myself. By doing so, I've found that when I return to a lower-intensity workload, I'm far more efficient than I used to be before pushing my limits.

Q3

How did you choose your target university?

A: Student H H同学:

When it comes to my journey of selecting a university, I must first admit that the University of Chicago’s outstanding reputation as a top-tier institution is undeniable. My decision to ultimately choose UChicago was the result of careful consideration of multiple factors.

During my college exploration, I primarily focused on universities along the East and West coasts of the United States. In addition to visiting schools in California, I also toured several renowned universities on the East Coast. I participated in summer programs at both the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University.

Moreover, I took part in an online summer program offered by the University of Chicago. Despite being conducted virtually, this experience gave me a solid impression of UChicago's academic rigor and educational environment, leaving me with a positive impression. What’s more, I had the opportunity to visit the UChicago campus in person, which allowed me to experience the learning and living environment firsthand.

In terms of campus atmosphere, I found myself particularly drawn to UChicago's environment compared to Columbia and UPenn. While this preference may be somewhat subjective, I genuinely felt a stronger connection to the overall vibe of the UChicago campus.

Beyond the campus itself, UChicago as an institution made a lasting impression on me. My experience with the online summer program reinforced my belief that UChicago is a university known for its rigorous academics and exceptional faculty.

UChicago's academic excellence is widely recognized, with many of its programs ranking among the best in the world. Its economics program, in particular, is renowned globally.

Although my personal interests lie more in data science and computer science—areas where UChicago may not be considered the strongest—it still offers numerous top-tier programs that I find incredibly appealing.

Additionally, the city of Chicago itself has a unique charm. While I had heard concerns about safety, my visit left me captivated by the city's architectural beauty, especially in the downtown area. As one of the economic and financial hubs of the United States, Chicago undoubtedly offers abundant opportunities for internships and career development.

Of course, Chicago's long and cold winters could be considered a minor drawback.

Finally, one crucial factor in my decision was receiving an ED0 invitation after completing UChicago's summer program. This provided me with the valuable opportunity to apply through Early Decision with a binding commitment. I saw this as a rare and fortunate opportunity, so I submitted my application without hesitation.

A: Student J J同学:

First, Mr. Williams helped me identify a list of potential universities based on my academic performance, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, and conversations with my parents. Using this list as a starting point, I began researching each school's ranking, key programs, areas of interest, and campus culture. At the same time, I also looked into other similar universities for comparison. Eventually, after a series of discussions with my parents following the summer break, we finalized my college list.

During this process, Mr. Williams strongly recommended that I apply to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, believing that its campus culture aligned well with my personality. After learning more about UNC Chapel Hill's Political Science program and its strong commitment to social justice, I decided to apply for their political science major.

Q4

What kind of support did your school provide during the application process?

A: Student H H同学:

Reflecting on my college application journey, I can confidently say that my school provided comprehensive support throughout the process. One of the most crucial aspects was the school's AP program, which played a vital role in strengthening my application.

As a signature feature of our school, the AP curriculum not only allowed me to engage with college-level content early on but also significantly enhanced my application profile. From what I've learned, students at other schools typically take seven or eight AP courses at most.

However, thanks to my school's extensive AP offerings, I was able to complete a total of 16 AP courses. Without my experience at BASIS, I can hardly imagine having the opportunity to take on such a rigorous AP workload. These courses undoubtedly added substantial weight to my application.

In addition to the AP program, the school's college counselor provided invaluable guidance throughout the entire process. I had numerous in-depth discussions with the counselor, covering everything from essay writing to application strategies.

Whether it was the intense final push during application season or the early planning stages in 11th grade, the counselor consistently provided professional advice and support. Moreover, during the early application period, the counseling team actively guided and coordinated the process to minimize excessive competition among students applying to the same universities. While the school never imposed restrictions on which universities students could apply to, they worked hard to ensure fair opportunities for everyone through thoughtful coordination.

A: Student M M

Starting in Grade 9, the school’s college counselors began conducting one-on-one meetings with me to understand my preferred universities and intended majors. During these sessions, we also discussed the extracurricular activities I had participated in and those I hoped to engage in in the future. In Grade 12, we attended small-group college counseling classes, where we learned how to write application essays, how to choose universities that align with our goals, and what to expect from university life — something I found particularly exciting and inspiring.

During the nerve-wracking wait for admission results, feelings of anxiety were inevitable. Our college counselors proactively reached out to us, offering guidance and emotional support to help us manage this stress. The school psychologist also provided classes teaching us how to maintain a calm mindset when facing our application outcomes. Additionally, other teachers showed their understanding by reducing our workload and assignments during this period. Even after receiving my admission results, I decided to continue taking AP Calculus BC and Drama classes, and I plan to sit for the respective AP exams.

Q5

What advice do you have for future students?

A: Student H H同学:

For those about to embark on their college application journey, I have a few pieces of advice to share.

First and foremost — and what I believe is the most important — is to follow your interests. Whether it's for your college application or your broader life path, passion should be your core driving force.

Don't choose a major just because it's considered "popular" or "easy to get into" if it goes against what you're truly interested in. Doing so will likely make your academic journey exhausting and unrewarding, and it will be difficult to achieve outstanding results. After all, how can you excel at something you have no genuine interest or enthusiasm for?

Of course, some compromises may be necessary to achieve your final application goals, and that's perfectly understandable. But completely abandoning your passions in favor of a path you have no desire to pursue would be an unwise decision.

In addition to following your interests, I would also advise against blindly chasing the number of competitions you participate in.

Unless you possess exceptional talent in a particular field — such as winning a gold medal in an international Olympiad or achieving remarkable accomplishments in a specialized area — participating in numerous competitions alone won't necessarily make you stand out.

These days, competitions have become increasingly common; the ones you've taken part in are likely ones that many others have joined as well, and the awards you've earned may not be unique. Consequently, relying on competitions to showcase your individuality has become increasingly challenging.

In my view, having some competition experience is sufficient. Overloading yourself with competitions can be counterproductive. Instead, focus your energy on what genuinely excites you, commit to it with dedication, and strive to create something distinctive. I believe such experiences will leave a stronger impression on admissions officers and significantly enhance your application.

A: Student L L同学:

I believe it's important not to place too much value on what others think. By this stage in life, most people have developed a fairly clear understanding of their own choices and actions — you don't need to rely on external validation to determine your self-worth.

The same goes for college applications. Do your best with what's within your control, and leave the rest to the admissions officers. Truly capable people can still thrive even without attending a prestigious university or winning impressive awards. Placing too much importance on labels or external recognition can overshadow the experiences that truly shape you. That's how I see it.
