extracting oil from tar sands的三个好处
Listening:
Reading:
In recent decades, engineers in Canada have begun extracting oil from deposits called tar sands. These are sandy deposits that contain a very thick, almost solid form of oil. Extracting oil from tar sands has a several benefits.
Development
Tar sands are mostly located in areas of central Canada that are rural and underdeveloped. The tar sands industry brings new residents, along with building projects and infrastructure, to these remote areas. Examples of projects supported and financed by the tar sands industry include new housing and improved local roads. Thanks to increasing populations and improving amenities such as new homes and better roads, the areas have become more appealing as places to live.
Tax Revenue
Extracting oil from the tar sands can be very profitable, and this benefits both the government and individuals. By collecting taxes from the oil companies, the government receives a certain percentage of the companies’ profits each year. When the industry is profitable, the government can collect billions of dollars in taxes. With all the money collected from oil companies, individuals’ taxes can remain low. Alberta, the Canadian province where the tar sands are located, has very low taxes on personal income and no tax on consumer goods.
Environmental Protection
Oil companies are investing in technologies to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere during the extraction process. Extracting oil from tar sands requires considerable energy, currently generated by burning fossil fuels, which contributes to climate change by releasing CO2. However, one company has implemented carbon capture and storage—a process that captures CO2 and safely stores it underground. In a single year, carbon capture and storage prevented one million tons of CO2 from being released. The company using this technology has made their technique public, so other companies can now use the same methods to further reduce carbon emissions.
Listening:
Dr. Diaz:
This week, we discussed the importance of role models and opinion makers in society. One idea we discussed was the widespread impact of "influencers." Influencers are people who are very active posting on social media and who have many followers. Influencers' posts and opinions can influence their followers' choices on everything from fashion to politics. In your opinion, do social media influencers generally have a positive or negative effect on their followers? Why do you think so?
Kelly:
I think the influencers' effect is generally positive. People can learn about the latest trends and topics in a very quick and efficient way by following influencers. In the past, people had to spend time looking through magazines or visiting boutiques to even know what was trending.
Paul:
I think influencers generally have a negative effect because they have far too much influence. I can think of one influencer who only has to mention a particular kind of sports shoe, and the next day they'll be sold out. The followers aren't really thinking for themselves; they're just blindly following the influencers' choices.
Dr.Gupta:
This week, we are going to discuss charitable work and community service: ordinary people volunteering their time to help their communities. Charitable or community-support activities range from cleaning up neighborhoods to running youth clubs or caring for older people. But many communities experience a problem: there are not enough people willing to do charitable or community work. What is one good way to encourage more people to do charitable or community work? Explain your choice.
Claire:
Others might disagree, but I think one way to get more people to do charitable work is to pay them for their time. Even a small amount that a charitable organization coordinating the work could afford would help. I think younger people in particular would be more willing to participate if they could earn a little money.
Paul:
I'm not sure I agree with Claire. People should participate because it is the right thing to do, not because there is a financial reward. Maybe the solution is in making people understand how important community work is. If people have a better understanding of that, they will be more willing to do their part.
